Read, Write Inc
At St John with St Michael Primary School we teach children to read using the Read, Write Inc. approach.
Read Write Inc. Phonics is a comprehensive literacy programme, weaving decoding, comprehension, writing and spelling together seamlessly. Fidelity to the teaching programme, rigorous assessment, tracking and one-to-one tutoring ensures that we guarantee progress for every child.
Where a pupil struggles to aquire the required knowlede or skills to be able to decode suffienciently, these pupils are identified swiftly and 'Pinny Time' afternoon interventions or one to one tutoring are put in place to enable the pupil to catch up and progress.
Pathways to Read
Once children have completed the Read Write Inc. programme and are able to read fluently, pupils then access whole class and small group Pathways to Read lessons.
Pathways to Write
In Key Stage 2, we follow the Pathways to Write approach to teach children to write. Class teachers use high quality texts through our book led approach to teaching writing.
From EYFS to Year 1 pupils develop their handwriting and letter formations skills through Read Write Inc handwriting appraoches.
From Year 2 to Year 6 pupils develop their handwriting through Letter Join. Letter Join is a dyslexia friendly, cursive handwriting approach. By the end of Year 3 we expect all pupils to have developed a legible joined handwriting style. Once pupils write legibly and cursivly, they will then have the opportunity to write with a pen.
