Mathematics at Our School

At St John with St Michael's, we believe that all children can succeed in mathematics through a structured, engaging, and inclusive approach. Our maths curriculum is designed to develop confident, fluent mathematicians who can reason, problem-solve, and apply their knowledge across a range of contexts.

We follow the White Rose Power Maths scheme as the core of our maths teaching. This scheme is built around a mastery approach, ensuring that pupils develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts before moving on. Lessons are carefully sequenced, with opportunities for children to explore, reason, and apply their learning through varied and challenging activities.

Alongside Power Maths, we enhance our curriculum with additional programmes to strengthen key mathematical skills. In Years 3 and 4, we use Number Sense to support the development of secure times tables knowledge. This programme helps children build fluency, confidence, and flexibility with multiplication facts, which are essential for success across the maths curriculum.

All pupils also access Times Tables Rock Stars both in school and at home. This fun and motivating platform supports the development of automaticity in times tables, helping children to recall facts quickly and accurately.

In the Early Years and Key Stage 1, we teach Mastery of Number from Reception to Year 2. This programme deepens children’s understanding of number and place value, ensuring strong foundations are in place. By securing these essential concepts early, children are well prepared for more complex mathematical learning in later years.

Through our carefully planned curriculum and supportive learning environment, we aim to inspire a positive attitude towards maths and equip every child with the skills they need for future success.
