At St. John with St. Michael C.E. Primary, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum is guided by the RE Today Primary RE framework from the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education (NATRE). Rooted in our Christian ethos, our RE lessons encourage pupils to explore Christianity and other world faiths such as Hinduism, Judaism and Islam, fostering respect, understanding, and spiritual growth. Through engaging discussions, stories, and reflective activities, we support children in developing their own beliefs and values while deepening their knowledge of religious traditions around the world.

During your child’s time at St. John with St. Michael C.E. Primary School, our mission is ‘To promote the physical, mental, moral and spiritual development of the children in the light of the Christian Gospel.’

Our RE curriculum is an essential part of our school life, helping pupils grow in wisdom, compassion, and respect for others as well as reflecting our LIGHT values to demonstrate love, integrity, generosity, hope and togetherness.

Religious Education Curriculum Overview

Right to Withdraw form Religious Education and Collective Worship

At St. John with St. Michael, Religious Education (RE) is taught in line with the agreed syllabus and reflects the school’s Christian foundation while exploring other faiths and worldviews in a balanced and inclusive way. We aim to help pupils develop knowledge, understanding and respect for different beliefs.

However, parents/carers have the legal right to withdraw their child from:

  • all or part of Religious Education, and/or
  • all or part of Collective Worship (e.g. assemblies with worship elements)

If you wish to request withdrawal, please speak to the Headteacher in the first instance. We encourage parents to discuss any concerns with us, so we can explain how RE and collective worship are approached in school. Often, parents find that once they understand the content, withdrawal is not necessary.

If withdrawal is still requested, we will make alternative arrangements for your child during these times. This may include supervised independent learning in another area of the school.

To arrange a discussion or to request withdrawal, please contact the school office on 01706 852614 or email office@sjm.fa1.uk
